Hey, I'm kinda confused about this email stuff. What's the difference between SMTP and PMTA? And do I need to use PMTA if I want my emails to actually land in people's inboxes?

SMTP is a general protocol used for email transmission by various email systems and PMTA is a specific commercial software.
SMTP provides the basic framework for sending emails, PMTA is used for large-scale email delivery.

No, You don't need to use PMTA only for it.

If everything was so easy, but yeah about landing in inbox you can use just some high rated ESP like sendgrid to be inside inbox FOREVER literally
All ends in reputation of sender and famous ESPs always have high
